shopping, Doha-style

About two weeks into our new life in Doha, our friend Omar took us down to Souk Waqif (the Old Market). The place is unlike anything I've ever seen (like much of Qatar). It looks very old and traditional--but it is not. The souk is actually new, but designed without neon, cement, or any other modern accoutrements. There is air conditioning, but the units are well hidden. So walking through the souk, it feels like you are entering a completely different time.

In the center area, tables of men and women (rarely mixed) sit and drink tea, smoke shisha, and listen to the musicians and singers. Music in the souk is all traditional Arabic, as it is pretty much everywhere in Doha.
